About Johannes
Johannes Schmidt
Credit risk experience shaped by banking, investing and commercial real estate.
Johannes Schmidt is the founder and president of Alphaporting. His career has spanned institutional credit risk, investment management and commercial real estate, providing the perspective that underpins Alphaporting’s approach to tenant credit analysis.
At Deutsche Bank, Johannes worked across credit risk, lending structures and broader risk-management initiatives. His experience includes corporate credit assessment as well as involvement in the development of a global end-to-end RWA process designed to substantially improve the bank’s management of risk-weighted assets related to Securitization.
He later brought that credit perspective into commercial real estate at Deutsche Bank's Commercial Real Estate division and subsequently to Newmark, where his work connected corporate credit analysis with real estate investment decisions. Earlier experience at Ziff Brothers Investments added an investment-management perspective, helping shape a view of credit risk not only as a question of default probability, but as an input into pricing, structure and risk-adjusted decision-making.
Johannes founded Alphaporting to apply that institutional credit discipline to a part of the commercial real estate market where reliable analysis is often difficult to obtain: private, unrated and sponsor-backed tenants. Today, he remains directly involved in the firm’s analysis, supporting investors, owners, lenders and advisors evaluating tenant risk in connection with acquisitions, leasing decisions and portfolio monitoring.
His professional background also includes graduate-level finance education, real-estate finance studies at New York University and the International Certification in Banking Risk and Regulation from the Global Association of Risk Professionals.
Beyond Alphaporting, Johannes has worked with founders and growth companies as a mentor with the German Accelerator in New York. That exposure to emerging businesses provides an additional perspective when assessing younger, rapidly changing or less conventionally documented companies - situations that frequently require judgment beyond traditional financial statement analysis.
Originally from Germany and based in New York, Johannes works across US and European business environments and is fluent in German and English.
